Compostable wipes!

Hi everyone,

Let's talk about cleaning - my least favourite thing to do!  But it's also important to me that the clinic room is kept clean and hygienic for clients.  For those quick cleans between clients such as the head rest on the table, door handles and kids toys it is really tempting to use a wipe.  However the thought of throwing single-use wipes in the bin always made me feel too guilty.  So I was stoked when I found an australian company making plastic-free, compostable wipes.  And we are so lucky in South Australia to be able to put these in the green bin along with tissues and paper towels.  The company is CleanLife and they do a range of wipes for different purposes.

A key thing to check for in any cleaning product (as well as personal care products) are fragrances or parfum.  They are hormone disruptive and may affect our hormonal balance including thyroid issues as well as hormonal based cancers such as certain breast cancers and prostate cancer.  Read Nicole Bijlsma's summary here for more information.  Pure essential oils are fine but anytime the word parfum or fragrance is used, it means it's synthetic and contains hormone disruptive chemicals.  Check things like laundry powder, dishwashing liquid, dishwasher powder and cleaning sprays.

If you get a bit overwhelmed because everything you check has fragrance in it I suggest starting with anything that's in contact with food and eating and drinking utensils e.g. dishwasher detergent, dishwashing liquid, sprays used to clean the kitchen bench, oven cleaning, what you use to clean the inside of the fridge etc.

The cheapest alternative to a cleaning spray is simply to fill a spray bottle with 20% vinegar and 80% water.  It will smell a bit vinegary but it doesn't last long at all and you can always add some essential oils.

So get creative with your cleaning to look after yourself, your family and the environment.

Happy cleaning! (said no-one ever)

Carla :)
