Are your feet happy?
Hi everyone,
Well we are truly into Spring, the weather is mostly beautiful but also all over the place which I think is how many of us can start to feel at this time of year! I know I am certainly feeling the stress of trying to get the homeopathy study finished by Christmas so I can start the New Year fresh and ready to go.
One of the things that can help us stay grounded when there's a lot going on around us (or in our own heads) is to focus on our feet...quite literally. As well as walking barefoot on the earth to allow for transfer of free electrons, there is an acupressure point on the sole of the foot (Kidney 1) and the kidney meridian is the main meridian for anxiety and fear based feelings and physical sensations. So when we either expose this point to the earth or massage it or even visualise a connection with the sole of the foot and the earth it may help to reduce anxiety and fear.
One of the techniques I often use to keep me grounded is visualising tree roots growing out of the soles of my feet through the floor and deep down into the earth until they feel truly rooted. I also just every now and then wiggle my toes and move my feet even when wearing shoes as we often hold a lot of tension in our feet without realising it.
Another interesting link is that in Kinesiology, the calf muscles are associated with the adrenal glands. So when we are feeling stressed, overwhelmed and/or fatigued stretching the calves, rubbing magnesium oil or cream into the calves or getting a lower leg massage can be really beneficial.
Of course, to keep the energy flowing through the calves and the feet we also need to move them! We want strong toes, feet, ankles and calves in order to be able to support the rest of our body - it's what holds us up!
I found this really good foot and lower leg exercise video the other day from the Foot Collective. They have a lot of free videos for foot and leg training and although they do sell products there are plenty of videos that don't require any products except what you already have around the home, such as this one which just uses two rolled up towels. There are plenty of options for making the exercises easier or more challenging depending on where you're at. Of course if you have any foot, knee or hip issues, please check with your healthcare practitioner first to see if they are appropriate for you.
Happy feet! (love that movie!)
Carla :)
