Hi everyone,
If you haven't visited the wonderful staff in the McLaren Vale Organic Store recently now is the time. They have a cheeky new product in there involving the humble potato...
Umm, these are chips Carla...deep fried potato...could they really be Carla Approved? You're right, technically chips are not Carla Approved. However, being realistic (when it suits me), chips are a treat food that many of us have from time to time. So what interested me about these chips was that they are cooked in avocado oil. Avocado oil has two advantages in this tasty snack. It is predominantly a monounsaturated (try saying that with a mouth full of chips!) fat and it has a higher smoke point than a lot of other oils.
Monounsaturated fats are the healthiest types of fats for our hearts and circulation. Avocadoes, olives and most nuts are high in monounsaturated fat. Avocado oil, olive oil and macadamia oil are high in monounsaturated fat. Rapeseed oil (canola oil) is also high in monounsaturated fat but unfortunately most canola is genetically modified (GM) these days.
Smoke point - this is basically the temperature at which oils turn into unhealthy forms of fat. Avocado oil has a smoke point of approximately 270 degrees celsius, macadamia and olive oil 190-200 degrees. Deep frying is done at about 180 degrees. So technically you could use olive or macadamia oil but it's getting a bit borderline.
Here is a link to a list of oils and their smoke points.
Ideally with cooking of any type we want to use an oil that is high in monounsaturated fat and has a high smoke point - double tick for avocado oil.
Needless to say, all oils contain the same amount of calories so our portions of these types of foods need to be kept in check!
And, maybe chips aren't quite a Carla Approved food category, but these chips have been tried and tested and are officially Hubby Approved!
Happy munching!
Carla :)
